My Mobile India Article: Abhishek Kumar, Regional Director, Oncam speaks about video analytics potentials in security system

Oncam is an independent, specialised IP video and technology company with a sole focus on 360-degree smart IP video – working with partners to deliver high-value business solutions for customers. They have deep industry knowledge combined with specialized expertise in healthcare, retail, transport, maritime and ports, banking, casinos and hospitality. My Mobile’s Nijhum Rudra interacted with Abhishek Kumar, Regional Director, South Asia, Oncam about the key challenges in setting up a successful Security System in the hospitality zones and how it is taking a lead in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Excerpts from the interview…

What are some of the key challenges in setting up a successful security systems in the hospitality space? How is your organization tackling the challenges with unique solutions?

Establishing security and surveillance infrastructure for businesses catering to the hospitality sector and dedicated zones is more challenging than it seems to be. Constant monitoring becomes a major problem, as continuous surveillance via video feeds from specific locations, including entrances, parking lot, utility areas, lobby, kitchen, etc., needs manual overseeing for effective security. However, since such operations are managed by security personnel, this leaves a large room for errors, including negligence and resource unavailability. This can cause a considerable dent on the overall security framework.

The number of devices required, moreover, contributes significantly to the deployment and operation-related overheads. Security cameras are constricted by their field of view and a single section of a dining hall or a parking lot can require up to 3 to 4 security cameras. Despite this, it leaves multiple blind spots, making it imperative to zoom, pan, or tilt the camera to obtain the desired view. But still doing so for a recorded feed is not possible, leaving hospitality businesses in a veritable tizzy as they have to face multiple issues such as security breach, theft, vandalism, unauthorized access, and claims for slips and falls.

We address all of these challenges faced in addition to providing hospitality businesses value-added services using our 360-degree, IP-driven surveillance solutions. Our solutions are also powered by video analytics capabilities that eliminate the possibility of operator malfunctioning.

Can you please give an overview of Oncam and what is the key value proposition and business model of your firm?

Our advanced 360- degree solutions facilitate comprehensive HD video generation for the desired field of view without leaving any blind spots. This single video feed can be de-warped to create desired number of virtual cameras with ability to zoom, pan, and tilt even a recorded video. Also, leveraging the power of video analytics, we can easily identify thefts, vandalism, unauthorized access, and anti-social behaviour etc to create a comprehensive security framework.

Lesser number of devices also reduces the bandwidth and storage requirements, thereby decreasing operational expenditure. Adding to this, our video feeds are ideally generated in H.264 format, which has higher compressibility and consumes less storage space despite rendering high definition video output. Our solutions also come across as an important tool for retrospective tracking.

How Oncam is taking a lead in the Swatchh Bharat Abhiyan and what are your missions and visions in this aspect?

Our video analytics-driven surveillance solution can aptly monitor the cleanliness parameters of a city day in and day out with absolute precision. With problems such as open defecation being recorded and notified to the concerned department, whether it is in a railway junction or the municipal corporation of a city, early implementation of necessary action becomes possible. This results in a proactive cleanliness mechanism being deployed successfully. Oncam’s solutions can also be used to monitor the operations of waste disposal in the city and dumping grounds, which are known to frequently catch fire and contribute to air pollution besides other health hazards.

How would you like to utilize your certification in India for the food processing plants?

The certification shall help us tap into the food processing plants with an added confidence that is necessary to generate early trust among clients. With the economies of scale as high as India, we are rightly positioned to help food processing units enhance productivity while working in line with ‘zero effect, zero defect’ policy down to the human resources.

Who are your key competitors’ and what are your business strategies to compete with them?

There are about five to six key competitors, but diverse areas of expertise leave little room for head-to-head competition. Moreover, our specialization in 360-degree solutions and video analytics along with a number of successful deployments keeps us ahead of the curve in terms of market share and competition. Oncam’s solutions cover a wide canvas of offerings including indoor, outdoor, panel-mounted, concealed, night vision and other specialized security devices, which we constantly enhance through our in-house R&D initiatives and a hands-on after-sales service.

Can you please elucidate some of the 2018 budget impacts in the IP surveillance industry?

The Union Budget 2018-19 has earmarked generous budget allocations for railways, healthcare, infrastructure, and smart cities. This is going to give a considerable impetus to the IP surveillance industry market. Also, as all trains are to be gradually equipped with state-of-the-art amenities such as CCTV cameras while investment is also being channelized to improve airport connectivity, new opportunities for the surveillance and security sector are on the horizon. We, at Oncam, truly believe that this year’s budget will act as a catalyst that will augment the growth of the surveillance industry manifold.

What are your smart city projects in India?

Through our Smart Cities Projects, Oncam aims to strengthen the surveillance and security framework in Indian cities by establishing state-of-the-art devices throughout these places. Oncam’s end-toend services are, at present, being deployed across various cities such as Surat. Other cities, including Faridabad and Nagpur, are also opting for similar 360 degree solutions. The success of our products is largely because of the decreased deployment costs as we provide thorough surveillance with a single camera besides other advantages such as lean and easily manageable infrastructural framework and lower operational expenses.

What are some of the biggest USPs of Oncam in the IP surveillance domain?

Our specialized product offerings have been certified by various agencies of authority in diverse domains such as ATEX for explosion proof, transportation-rated, rugged 360-degree cameras and NSF for Food processing. From a wider perspective, our acquired expertise in 360-degree surveillance technology has kept us in good stead and enhanced our ability to understand as well as convey the tenets of effective security framework implementation for the end-customer belonging to diverse industries and sectors.

Going forward, what are some of your roadmap in the coming year?

At present, we are diversifying our product portfolio and are working on 180-degree solutions to effectively monitor indoor and outdoor tri-junction areas. We are also broadening our service footprint throughout the Indian subcontinent by forging new channel partnerships. Our focus is primarily on key growth regions that include urban geographies, tier II, and tier III cities in addition to the Smart Cities project. We are also increasing our B2B tie-ups across the- board for better security deployments in MNCs and large organizations.
